Twenty years ago, when gcc4 was released, the g77 compiler was replaced by gfortran. However, due to several issues with it, it was removed from the NetBSD base image. Thanks to recent changes to NetBSD-current, gfortran is now included in the operating system base image again. In the near future, there are plans to add the appropriate variables to pkgsrc to enable compiling programs using this system compiler, without requiring the gcc12 package from the pkgsrc repository.
