Facebook expands the functionality of the pages of deceased users

Facebook has expanded the capabilities of perhaps the strangest and most controversial feature. We are talking about the accounts of deceased people. The idea is that you can now set up an account so that after the death of the owner, it is managed by a trusted person - the custodian. On the page itself, it will be possible to share memories of the deceased. Alternatively, it is possible to completely delete the account after the death of the owner.

The accounts of the deceased will now receive a special "commemorative" section, which will separate the records made by them during their lifetime from the records of relatives. It will also be possible to limit the lists of those who can publish or view messages on the page. And if the account previously belonged to a minor, then only parents will have access to management.

β€œWe have heard from people that immortalizing a profile could be a big step that not everyone is ready to take right away. This is why it is so important that those closest to the deceased person can decide when to take this step. We now only allow friends and family members to request that an account be immortalized,” the company said.

The first version of "commemorative" profiles appeared back in 2015, but now it has received new features. At the same time, unified algorithms were used to process β€œmemorial” and ordinary pages, which caused extremely unpleasant situations when friends and relatives of the deceased received offers to invite them to a party or wish them a happy birthday.

As stated, this problem has now been solved with the help of artificial intelligence. If the account is not yet "perpetuated", then the AI makes sure that it does not fall into the general sample. In addition, now only family and friends can submit a request for the assignment of an account with the status of "commemorative".

At the same time, it is noted that about 30 million people visit such pages every month. And the developers promise to improve this functionality.
