For the first time, a post has been flagged as inauthentic on Facebook.

Today, for the first time on the social network Facebook, a message published by a user was marked as β€œinaccurate information.” This was done after an appeal from the Singapore government, as the country introduced a law to combat fake news and manipulation on the Internet.

β€œFacebook is required by law to inform you that the Singapore government has stated that this post contains false information,” reads the notice, which is shown to Facebook users in Singapore.

For the first time, a post has been flagged as inauthentic on Facebook.

The corresponding note was placed under the user publication, but the text of the message was not changed. The publication in question was posted by one of the users running the opposition blog States Times Review. The text concerns the arrest of a Singaporean who denounced the country's ruling party.

However, law enforcement officials denied information about the arrest. Initially, the Singaporean authorities contacted the author of the publication demanding a refutation, but he refused because he lives in Australia. As a result, the Singaporean authorities were forced to send a complaint to Facebook, after which the message was marked as β€œfalse information.”

β€œAs required by Singapore law, Facebook has attached a special label to the controversial post, which was determined by the Singapore government to be inaccurate. Since the law came into force recently, we hope that it will not be used by the authorities to restrict freedom of speech,” said a representative of the social network.

It is worth noting that Facebook often blocks content that violates the laws of certain countries. In a report on the company’s activities published this summer, it was said that by June 2019, about 18 such cases had been registered in different countries.
