Before the release Fallout 76 Bethesda Softworks promised that real money in the game will only allow you to buy cosmetic items that are not capable of providing a gameplay advantage. Disposable Basic Repair Kits allow you to completely repair a piece of equipment without wasting materials. They are only sold in the Atomic Shop, a virtual store. They cannot be "knocked out" from enemies, made by yourself, bought directly in the game, or obtained in some other way. Exactly this angry users: they believe that Bethesda "betrayed" the gamers who trusted her and Fallout 76 is moving towards a "pay to win" (pay-to-win) scheme. The authors also added improved sets (Improved Repair Kits), which increase the durability of the item up to 150%, but they can only be obtained in the game itself.

The developers thanked fans for their feedback and comments on the repair kits. The company believes that it did not break its promise to sell items related to the gameplay in the Atomic Shop. Repair kits supposedly do not fall into this category, but even if they are found to be capable of giving unfair superiority, the creators will not leave this problem without attention.

"Repair Kits really allow you to repair items on the go, and we think you'll find them just a handy tool to use while traveling around Appalachia," wrote a Bethesda spokesperson. β€œIf, after implementing the repair kits into the game, we find that they provide any advantage over other gamers, we will make the necessary changes to fix this.”

The developers also emphasized that the atoms needed to buy repair kits can be obtained not only for real money, but also for passing tests. In addition, improved kits cannot be bought at all - they are issued for achieving certain goals: for example, for killing the Scorchbeast Queen. In the future, there will be new ways to get more powerful sets.

Curiously, Bethesda has already added items with gameplay bonuses to the Atomic Shop. So, from January 29 to February 4 there it could be Buy four special costumes of The Unstoppables comic book superheroes from Fallout 4 for 800 atoms ($8) each, temporarily increasing maximum health by 15% (provided that all party members were wearing different costumes). Later, the developers removed this bonus, although the costumes themselves were left. In December 2018 in the game files found mention of lunchboxes - paid containers in the spirit of Fallout Shelter. However, they probably changed their minds about introducing them.
