Fedora 41 plans to remove the X11 session from the base set of components

The Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo), the committee responsible for the technical part of the distribution's development, decided on March 5th to remove X11 session support from the base installation of the Fedora 41 distribution. Now only Wayland will remain by default.

Installation of X11 support remains available from the repositories as a package gnome-session-xsession.

The main reason for the end of X11 support in Fedora is the transition of the X.Org server to the obsolete category in RHEL 9 and the decision to remove it in RHEL 10.
