Fedora Linux 36 scheduled to enable Wayland by default on systems with proprietary NVIDIA drivers

Implementation in Fedora Linux 36 is slated to switch to the default GNOME session based on the Wayland protocol on systems with proprietary NVIDIA drivers. The ability to select a GNOME session running on top of a traditional X server will continue to be provided as before. The change has not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical part of the development of the Fedora Linux distribution.

It is noted that in the recent release of the NVIDIA proprietary driver, changes have been implemented to provide full support for OpenGL and Vulkan hardware acceleration in X11 applications running using the XWayland DDX (Device-Dependent X) component. When using the new branch of the NVIDIA driver, the performance of OpenGL and Vulkan in X applications launched using XWayland is now almost the same as running under a regular X server.

Recall that the distribution started offering a GNOME session based on the Wayland protocol as of Fedora 22 by default. With the release of Fedora Linux 35, this changed and the ability to use Wayland with proprietary NVIDIA drivers was added as an option. In Fedora Linux 36, this option is planned to be moved to the default mode.
