Firefox may introduce tab grouping and vertical tabbed navigation

Mozilla has begun reviewing and considering implementing ideas for improving the tabbed experience in Firefox that have been submitted by members of the community at ideas.mozilla.org and have received the most support from users. The final decision on implementation will be made after analyzing the ideas by the Mozilla product development team (product team). Among the ideas being considered:

  • Vertical tab list mode, reminiscent of the tab list sidebar in MS Edge and Vivaldi, with the ability to disable the top tab bar. Moving the horizontal row of tabs to the sidebar will allow you to allocate additional screen space for viewing site content, which is especially important on widescreen laptop screens in light of the fashion for placing fixed, non-scrolling headers on sites, which greatly narrow the area with useful information.
  • Preview tabs when you hover over a button in the tab bar. Now, when you hover the mouse over the tab button, the page title is shown, i.e. Without changing the active tab, it is impossible to distinguish between different pages with the same favicon pictures and headings.
  • Tab grouping - the ability to combine several tabs into a group, presented in the panel with one button and highlighted with one label. For users who are used to keeping a large number of open tabs, the grouping function will significantly improve the usability and allow you to combine content by task and type. For example, often during the initial study of a topic, many related pages open, to which you will need to return after some time when writing an article, but you don’t want to leave secondary pages in the form of separate tabs, since they take up space in the panel.
