Firefox Relay will add a phone number spoofing feature

Mozilla is working on expanding the Firefox Relay service, which allows you to generate temporary email addresses for registering on sites or subscribing so as not to advertise your real address. A change that implements similar functionality for phone numbers is currently being reviewed. Firefox Relay will allow you to generate temporary phone numbers to hide the user's real number when registering or receiving SMS notifications.

Calls and SMS received to the created virtual number will automatically be redirected to the user's real number, hiding it from strangers. If necessary, the user can deactivate the virtual number and no longer receive calls and SMS through it. As in the case of postal addresses, the service can also be used to identify the source of information leakage. For example, for different registrations, you can link separate virtual numbers, which, in the event of receiving SMS mailings or advertising calls, will make it possible to understand who exactly is the source of the leak.

Also noteworthy is the intention to integrate Firefox Relay support into the Firefox mainstream. If earlier the generation and substitution of addresses required the installation of a special add-on, now the browser, when a user connects to an account in Firefox Account, will automatically suggest replacements in the input fields with email. The inclusion of Firefox Relay in Firefox is scheduled for September 27th.

The addition of phone number spoofing to Firefox Relay is expected on October 11, for now only for users in the US and Canada. The service will be paid, but its cost has not yet been determined. The basic service for redirecting 5 email addresses is free, and the cost of the extended paid version of Firefox Relay Premium for mail forwarding (unlimited addresses, cutting trackers, the ability to use your own domain) after September 27 will be $1.99 per month or $12 per year (until September 27, the promo was valid -period with a price of $0.99 per month). The Firefox Relay code is open source under the MPL-2.0 license and can be used to create a similar service on your hardware.
