In Germany, they plan to transfer 25 thousand PCs in state institutions to Linux and LibreOffice

Schleswig-Holstein, a region in northern Germany, plans to move all computers of civil servants, including teachers in schools, to open source as part of an initiative to get rid of dependence on a single vendor. At the first stage, by the end of 2026, they plan to replace MS Office with LibreOffice, and later replace Windows with Linux. Migration will affect about 25 computers in various government agencies and will be carried out taking into account the problems that arose during the transition to Linux public institutions in the city of Munich.

The migration decision has already been considered by the Schleswig-Holstein parliament and confirmed in an interview with the region's digital minister. It is noted that the transition to open source software is already in the process - at present, a transition has been made to the open Jitsi video conferencing platform and LibreOffice and browser solutions based on the Phoenix open package (OnlyOffice, nextCloud, Matrix) have been tested for two years. Solutions based on five different Linux distributions are also in the testing phase, which will help determine the optimal distribution for migration.
