The developers of the GTK library have announced the addition of an icon network representation of the contents of directories to the dialog opened for selecting files in applications. By default, the classic file list view will continue to be used, and a separate button has appeared on the right side of the panel to switch to icon mode. The implementation of this functionality became possible 18 years after the publication of the proposal, thanks to the unification of the data model for the GtkListView and GtkGridView widgets. The change is expected to be implemented in future versions of GTK and GNOME.
