The Fixit team disassembled the tracker. Air Tag 2, following its tradition of examining every new Apple device. An examination of the internal components confirmed several key hardware changes, but also revealed one significant security flaw.

The main issue iFixit engineers discovered remains the speaker's vulnerability. Despite Apple increasing its volume by 50% and announcing new features to protect against unwanted tracking, it's still easy to physically mute the speaker while maintaining full functionality of the tag. To do this, as Apple writes 9to5Mac, it is enough to unsolder two thin wires connecting the speaker to the printed circuit board.
In addition to the speaker, experts examined other components of the device. On the back of the printed circuit board, they identified a new system chip that controls Bluetooth and NFC. They also discovered an Apple U2 chip, which is responsible for second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. This component enables the improved Precision Finding feature, but it is only available with the iPhone 15 and later.

Thus, the tag's hardware has received the expected improvements, but the physical protection of the sound alert, which is one of the key elements in countering covert surveillance, has not been fundamentally revised, Fixit believes.
