KDE spoke about the project's plans for the next two years

Head of the non-profit organization KDE eV Lydia Pintscher presented new goals for the KDE project for the next two years. This was done at the Akademy 2019 conference, where she talked about future goals in her acceptance speech.

KDE spoke about the project's plans for the next two years

Among those, KDE's move to Wayland is announced to completely replace X11. By the end of 2021, it is planned to transfer the KDE core to a new platform, eliminate existing shortcomings and make this environment the primary one. The X11 version will be optional.

Another plan will be to improve the consistency and organization of interaction in application development. For example, the same tabs are implemented differently in Falkon, Konsole, Dolphin, and Kate. And this leads to fragmentation of the code base, increased complexity in fixing errors, and so on. It is assumed that within two years, developers will be able to unify applications and their elements.

In addition, it is planned to create a single directory for add-ons, plugins and plasmoids in KDE. There are a lot of them, but there is still no single structure or even a complete list. There are also plans to update and modernize platforms for interaction between KDE developers and users.

The latter means improving the mechanisms for generating packages and reworking the accompanying documentation. At the same time, we note that in 2017 the organization has already set goals for a two-year period. They implied an increase in the convenience of working with basic applications, an increase in the security of user data and an improvement in the "microclimate" for new members of the community.
