KDE has implemented window shadow rendering on the server side for applications like Steam and Discord

Another weekly development report for KDE has been published, showcasing a new set of changes for the KDE Plasma 6.8 branch, with a release scheduled for October 14. Recent changes include:

  • The KWin compositor manager has been updated to automatically redraw window shadows and outlines on the server side, as well as apply corner rounding effects for applications that utilize client-side decoration (CSD) but do not support these design elements. This update has helped give a standard KDE appearance to applications like Steam and Discord, whose windows were previously rendered without shadows, borders, or rounding.

A new window rule for activating shadows has been implemented (KWin Window Rules) — 'Window manager draws titlebar, frame, and shadows.' Shadows are automatically added to X11 applications that do not use server-side decoration and do not draw shadows on the client side.

  • The System Monitor application now allows binding processes to selected CPUs or CPU groups for execution only on those (CPU affinity).
  • In the configurator, the implementation of the window behavior settings page has been transitioned to use QML, and the design has been standardized with other pages.
  • Global keyboard shortcuts have been added for reordering tasks in the list (Meta+Ctrl+PageUp, Meta+Ctrl+PageDown) or cycling through tasks (Meta+Ctrl+Shift+PageUp, Meta+Ctrl+Shift+PageDown) in the Task Manager widget.
  • The Frameworks 6.29 library set has optimized the ksvg and kguiaddons components, which slightly reduces memory consumption.
