Giant pandas are instantly recognizable by sight, but their uniform black and white coloring makes them indistinguishable to the human eye.

But not for artificial intelligence. Chinese researchers have developed an AI-based facial recognition app that can identify specific pandas.

Visitors to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China will soon be able to use the app to identify any of the dozens of captive giant pandas and learn more about them.

The creators of the application also believe that with its help, scientists will be able to track bears in natural conditions.

"The app and database will help us collect more accurate and comprehensive data on the population, distribution, age, sex ratio, births and deaths of wild pandas that live in mountainous areas and are difficult to track," said researcher Chen Peng, co-author of "Giant panda face recognition using a small database".
