LG's first large-format OLED factory opens in China

LG Display aims to become a major player in the large format panel market OLED for TVs. Obviously, premium TVs need to get the best screens available, which OLED fits perfectly. This is especially important for the market in China, where factories for the production of LCD and OLED panels are springing up like mushrooms after rain. For the sake of a leap forward, LG Display even changed its original plans to build a powerful factory for the production of LCD in China first, and only then reorient it to the production of OLED. In July last year, we recall, the company received from the Chinese authorities разрешение to reorient the 8.5G generation plant under construction for the production of LCD near the city of Guangzhou to the production of OLED. South Korean sources today сообщилиthat the LG Display factory in Guangzhou has begun pilot production of OLED.

The official launch of the enterprise is scheduled for the end of August. However, LG Display emphasizes the ability to shift the schedule for a full-scale launch of a new enterprise in the direction of a shorter time frame. If everything goes well and the level of rejects is within acceptable limits, mass production at the enterprise can begin in July. The method for printing two panels of the same size simultaneously on a common substrate is subject to customization. This technology called MMG (Multi Model Glass) has already been implemented by LG Display at one of its production facilities in South Korea for the production of large-format LCD panels. The technology speeds up production processes, but requires precise debugging. The success of the MMG process implementation at the Guangzhou plant will determine how soon the facility will begin full-scale OLED production in China.

In the first phase of the new plant's commissioning, LG Display expects to process up to 60 substrates each month with sides of 2200 × 2500 mm. Later, the capacity should be increased to 90 thousand substrates per month. In terms of TVs, this means that LG's large-format OLED output will increase from 2,9 million units in 2018 to 4 million units by the end of this year or early next year, and in 2021 production will increase to 10 million panels per year. The company plans to supply OLED panels both to the Chinese market and to the international one.
