The reason was the patch number KB4534310, which confirmed in Redmond. This update is reported to cause a crash if the Stretch option is used when setting the wallpaper. The problem manifests itself on Windows 7 SP1 of all editions and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

The company notes that they are aware of the problem, but they will not solve it due to the end of support. Thus, it remains to use other personalization options or pre-select the wallpaper for the exact screen size. You can't stretch them anymore.

One can only hope that the problem will be solved within the framework of Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU), because updates will be released there until 2023 inclusive.
