GRUB2 update reveals an issue that causes it to fail to boot

Some RHEL 8 and CentOS 8 users have encountered problems after installing yesterday's GRUB2 bootloader update with critical vulnerability. Problems manifest themselves in the inability to boot after installing the update, including on systems without UEFI Secure Boot.

On some systems (for example, HPE ProLiant XL230k Gen1 without UEFI Secure Boot), the problem manifests itself, including freshly installed RHEL 8.2 in the minimum configuration. After updating the packages and rebooting, it hangs and does not even show the GRUB menu.

Similar download issues are noted for RHEL 7 and CentOS 7 and also for Ubuntu ΠΈ Debian. It makes sense for users to wait until the situation is clearer to install updates related to GRUB2, and in case of problems with booting after the update - roll back to the previous version of the package with GRUB2 using bootable recovery media.
