In an address to employees, the head of Volkswagen acknowledged a significant lag behind Tesla

The transition of classic automakers to the electrification of transport is proceeding with difficulty. Firstly, it is necessary to reconsider approaches to machine design, investing huge amounts of money in new production and research. Secondly, the new generation of transport must become autonomous, therefore, in the field of autopilot, Volkswagen management tacitly recognizes Tesla’s leadership.

In an address to employees, the head of Volkswagen acknowledged a significant lag behind Tesla

According to the weekly Automotive Week, General Director of the Volkswagen concern Herbert Diess, in an address to employees, expressed serious concern about Tesla’s leadership in the production of electric vehicles and their transfer to automatic control. In particular, the head of Volkswagen is particularly concerned about Tesla's ability to train its Autopilot using data collected by the brand's entire fleet of electric vehicles. Every two weeks, programmers can update Tesla's control software, using the experience accumulated by all electric vehicles in recognizing road objects. No other automaker currently has such capabilities, as the head of the German automaker bitterly admits.

The entry into the market of the mass electric vehicle Volkswagen ID.3 is delayed precisely because of problems with the software, so Herbert Diess announced the formation of a new structure that will deal with this area of activity. The goal was set, if not to overtake Tesla, then at least to catch up with it in this field. Closing the gap will take a lot of time and money, and Volkswagen is well aware of this. The value of Tesla's capitalization is now twice as high as that of the entire Volkswagen concern, which produces dozens of cars of various brands. Experts believe that investors are evaluating Tesla's assets following the example of software development companies. Volkswagen does not have such convincing programmatic achievements in this area yet, but the automaker intends to make efforts to correct the situation.
