Core i9-10980XE shows mixed results in first review

Next month, Intel is due to release the next generation of Cascade Lake-X HEDT processors. Also in November, reviews of new products will be published, however, the Lab501 resource decided not to wait for the designated dates and published the results of its own tests of the flagship Core i9-10980XE processor.

To begin with, it is worth recalling that the Core i9-10980XE processor has 18 cores and 36 threads, in fact, like the Core i9-9980XE that preceded it. The novelty has a higher clock frequency: the base is equal to 3,0 GHz, and the maximum in turbo mode reaches 4,8 GHz. Also, the new processor has 48 PCIe lanes instead of 44 for its predecessors. And most importantly, the new Core i9-10980XE costs $ 1000 - almost half the price of its predecessor.

As for the results of testing new items, they look somewhat ambiguous. The thing is that in some tests, the Core i9-10980XE loses to its predecessor. For example, in Cinebench R20 last year's Core i9-9980XE is gaining an average of about 8800 points, while the result of the novelty was only 8563 points. There is also a regression in the FireStrike Extreme test. Perhaps this is due to the fact that colleagues from Lab501 did not test the final version of the processor, but a late engineering sample. Still, these results are worrying.
