Uber reports 3045 harassment and 9 homicides in first safety report

For the first time in its history, Uber has released a comprehensive 84-page U.S. ride safety report covering all of 2018 and part of 2017. The report says there were 3045 sexual harassments during Uber rides last year. In addition, Uber reported that nine people were killed while traveling and 58 died in car accidents. The numbers represent the first set of publicly available data regarding the safety of Uber taxis and comparisons with the US average.

Uber says users made about 3,1 million trips a day on its platform between 2017 and the end of 2018, for a total of 2018 billion trips in 1,3. To compare the number of incidents, the company noted that there were 2018 auto-related deaths in the US in 36 and 000 homicides in 2017.

Uber also clarified that of the 3045 reported incidents of sexual harassment in 2018 (and 2936 in 2017), 235 were rapes, with the remainder at various levels of harassment. The company says the vast majority involve unwanted kissing or touching, and such attacks are broken down into 21 categories. According to the report, drivers report assaults at about the same rate as passengers, including for the five most serious forms of sexual assault.

However, in reality, these figures can be much higher, since victims often do not report sexual harassment. Uber's only mention of comparable national totals is that almost 44% of women in the US have been victims of sexual harassment in their lifetime.

“The numbers are horrendous and hard to digest,” Uber General Counsel Tony West told The New York Times. “They talk about how Uber is a reflection of the society it serves.” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshani also tweeted, “I think a lot of people will be surprised at how rare these incidents are; others will understandably decide that such cases are still too common. They will all be right."
