postmarketOS and Alpine Add COSMIC Desktop Environment Support

The developers of the postmarketOS project, which is developing the distribution Linux for smartphones, based on the Alpine package base Linux, the Musl standard C library, and the BusyBox utility suite, announced the addition of support for the COSMIC desktop environment, developed in Rust. Pre-built postmarketOS builds with COSMIC are available for x86_64 systems, and a separate version optimized for Thinkpad X13s laptops is also available (if desired, a customized build can be created using the pmbootstrap utility). Previously, postmarketOS offered support for KDE Plasma Mobile, Phosh, GNOME Mobile, Sxmo, MATE, and Xfce.

postmarketOS and Alpine Add COSMIC Desktop Environment Support

COSMIC is being developed by System76 as a general-purpose project, not tied to a specific distribution and compliant with Freedesktop specifications. COSMIC's interface is built using the Iced library, which utilizes type-safe design, a modular architecture, and a reactive programming model. The project is also developing its own composite server cosmic-comp is based on Wayland. In addition to using the Rust language, COSMIC's key features include hybrid window tiling and stacked window docking (a grouping of windows similar to browser tabs), which can be enabled when linked to virtual desktops. The first stable release of COSMIC is scheduled for Q1 2025.

Other recent changes to postmarketOS include ports for the Samsung Galaxy S10+, Amlogic P241, Microsoft Lumia 640, and Ugoos AM3. Initial camera support has been added for the OnePlus 6, Motorola Moto E5 Plus, Motorola Moto G5s, Xiaomi Redmi 3S, Xiaomi Redmi 4 Standard, and Xiaomi Redmi 4A. Support for the following devices has been improved: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Google Pixel 3a XL, Google Pixel C, LG G7 ThinQ, LG V35 ThinQ, ODROID HC2, Lenovo ThinkPad X13s, Apple Macbook Air M1, Amazon Echo Dot 2nd gen, and Xiaomi Mi Note 10 / Mi CC9 Pro.

GNOME 48 has been added to the postmarketOS repository. Dolphin has been used instead of the Index file manager in KDE Plasma Mobile builds. The mobile-config-firefox package has been updated with a set of settings to improve Firefox on mobile devices and disable components that affect privacy. Packages are being adapted to work with the system manager systemd, which can be used instead of the OpenRC init system.
