RAGE 2 won't have a deep storyline - it's "a game about action and freedom"

There are only a couple of weeks left until the release of RAGE 2, but we still don't know much about its plot. But the thing is that there is not so much of it. RAGE 2 director Magnus Nedfors said in a recent interview that this is not Red Dead Redemption 2 — like most Avalanche Studios games, the project will focus on action and freedom, rather than plot.

“I won't sit here and say that the deep story is why you should play RAGE 2. It's action. But we try to tell small stories through interactions with the characters you meet and the environment. This is something we want to promote more and more,” said Magnus Nedfors. “There are a lot of good story-driven games where the open world comes second, but their common mistake is that they try to tell a linear story. Then you can't give the player freedom. I think the entire industry needs to one day come to that magical moment where someone evolves open world storytelling."

The RAGE 2 director also shed light on one question that has been on fans' minds: is this an Avalanche Studios or id Software project? Although Nedfors did not give a direct and precise answer, it sounds like this is still a game from the first studio. “[id Software] didn't come to us and say, 'We think you should make RAGE 2 like this.' We had the opportunity to get creative and present an idea that we had from the very beginning, before they gave us anything. […] It was a great exchange in both directions. At the beginning of the project, Tim [Willits] said, "I don't understand how you make these open world games." I learned from a gaming industry legend, and he also learned a thing or two from us,” said Magnus Nedfors.

Avalanche Studios has never made a first-person game before, and according to Nedfors, id Software's contribution to RAGE 2 is significant in this regard.

We will find out how well the approaches of id Software and Avalanche Studios are intertwined on May 14, when RAGE 2 goes on sale for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
