Pilot implementation of smartphone identification system by IMEI begins in Russia

Russian mobile operators, according to TASS, have begun preparations for the introduction in our country of a system for identifying smartphones by IMEI.

About the initiative we told even last summer. The project is aimed at combating the theft of smartphones and mobile phones, as well as reducing the import of β€œgray” devices into our country.

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, which is unique for each device, will be used to block stolen smartphones, as well as β€œtubes” imported into Russia illegally.

The project provides for the formation of a centralized database, which will contain the identification numbers of subscriber devices used in mobile networks in Russia.

β€œIf the IMEI is not assigned to the device, or it matches the number of another gadget, then network access for such a device should be suspended, as well as for stolen or lost phones,” writes TASS.

Beeline, MegaFon and Tele2 began preparations for the implementation of the system. In addition, the Federal Communications Agency (Rossvyaz) is taking part in the initiative. The system is currently being launched in a pilot mode, which will allow testing various business processes. The test site will be provided by the Central Research Institute of Communications (TsNIIS), which manages the central IMEI database.

The timing of the practical implementation of the system is not reported. The fact is that the relevant bill is still being finalized - it has not yet been submitted to the State Duma.
