Online payments for taxi services, hotel reservations and transport tickets are growing in Russia

Mediascope conducted a study of the structure of online payments in Russia in 2018–2019. It turned out that over the year, the share of users who periodically make payments via the Internet remained almost unchanged, including payments for mobile communication services (85,8%), purchases in online stores (81%) and housing and communal services (74%).

At the same time, the number of people who pay online for taxis, book hotels online and buy transport tickets has grown. If in the last two categories the growth was 3%, then the share of those paying for a taxi increased by 12% over the year - from 45,4% in 2018 to 50,8% in 2019. This type of payment is most popular among young people - it is preferred by about 64% of respondents aged 18 to 24 and almost 63% in the group of 25 to 34 years. In the age group from 35 to 44 years old, almost 50% of respondents paid online for a taxi, in the category from 45 to 55 years old - 39%.

And only in two categories, a decrease in online payments was recorded - these are money transfers (from 57,2 to 55%) and online games (from 28,5 to 25,3%).

The study notes that bank cards remain the most popular means of making payments on the Internet, which were used by 90,5% of Russians over the year. 89,7% of respondents paid with the help of Internet banking, 77,6% - with electronic money.

Sberbank Online remains the leader among online payment services, which was used at least once by 83,2% of Russians during the year. In second place is Yandex.Money (52,8%), third is PayPal (46,1%). The top 5 also included WebMoney and QIWI electronic wallets (39,9% and 36,9%, respectively). About a quarter of respondents made online payments through the Internet banking of VTB, Alfa-Bank and Tinkoff Bank. Relatively recently, the VK Pay service was used by 15,4% of those who participated in the survey, mostly a young audience.

The study noted the growing popularity of contactless payments in Russia, mainly among the audience from 25 to 34 years old (57,3%). Over the year, 44,8% of respondents used them, a year earlier - 38,3%. Google Pay services are leading here (user growth from 19,6% to 22,9%), Apple Pay (18,9%), Samsung Pay (15,5%).
