The coronavirus pandemic has caused a surge in domain name registrations related to COVID-19 in one way or another. This trend is also noticeable in Russia, in the message of the Coordination Center for .RU/.РФ domains.
So, in the period from January 1 to March 27, 2020, 1310 domain names were registered in the .RU domain, and 324 domain names in the .РФ domain, in which the words corona, covid, virus, corona, covid, virus occur. At the same time, the peak of “coronavirus” registrations occurred on March 17 and 18. In total, there are 1638 such names in Russian national domains today.
The press service of the Coordination Center emphasizes that most of this kind of domain names lead to information resources that help in the fight against infection. Among these sites , , and many others. But, nevertheless, among the “coronavirus” sites there may be fraudulent and potentially malicious. For this reason, experts advise Internet users to be careful when working with web sites whose names refer to the name of the coronavirus or pandemic.
