Subaru will only produce electric vehicles in the mid-2030s

Japanese automaker Subaru announced on Monday that it has set a goal of moving towards worldwide sales of electric vehicles only in the mid-2030s.

Subaru will only produce electric vehicles in the mid-2030s

The news comes amid reports that Subaru has strengthened its partnership with Toyota Motor. It has become a common trend for global automakers to join forces to reduce the cost of developing and producing new technologies. Toyota currently owns 8,7% of Subaru. Subaru spends a lot of money adapting Toyota's hybrid technology to its vehicles. The product of this collaboration is the hybrid variant of the Crosstrek crossover, introduced in 2018.

In addition to the "Mild" and "Plug-in" hybrids already in Subaru's range, the Japanese company plans to develop a so-called "Strong" hybrid using Toyota technology, which should debut later this decade.

“Even though we use Toyota technology, we want to create hybrids that are in the spirit of Subaru,” CTO Tetsuo Onuki said at the briefing. Unfortunately, Subaru did not provide details about the new model.

Subaru also said that by 2030, at least 40% of its total sales worldwide will be electric and hybrid vehicles.
