US launches probe into Tesla Model S touchscreen failures

Touch control is inseparable from gadgets, and what is a Tesla electric car if not a gadget? I would like to believe this, but for a number of applications, buttons, levers and switches seem to be a more reliable solution than icons on a touch screen. The icons turned out to be a slippery slope as an element of the Tesla Model S control system. On this path, Tesla can expect trouble in the form of a recall of tens of thousands of electric vehicles.

Как сообщают American media, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - an agency of the US Executive Department - the US Department of Transportation (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has launched an investigation into complaints from owners of Tesla Model S electric vehicles about the failure of touch displays.

Over the past 13 months, the agency has received 11 complaints about screens in Tesla Model S vehicles that have been in service for nearly four to just over six years. These are cars of the specified model, produced in 2012-2015. If the screens fail, at the very least, the cars lose their rear camera feed, reducing visibility. However, no collisions or injuries were reported.

The agency's study will affect 63 Tesla Model S electric vehicles. According to preliminary data, the problem lies in the failure of the flash memory paired with the display controller (processor). The natural wear of flash memory cells leads to failure of the controller and display. Similar circuitry was also used in 159 Model S cars produced from 2016 to 2018 and X models released in early 2018, so the scope of the investigation can be increased.

I wonder on which controller (flash memory) is assembled touchscreen Crew Dragon spacecraft? It was first introduced in 2014, which means that the touch screens in it may be of the same generation as in the first Tesla Model S.

Returning to display failures in electric vehicles, we note that, losing this part of the control of car systems, the driver ceases to control the stove and air conditioning, the modes of which the automation begins to monitor. Internet access and the ability to use cellular communications are also lost. Fortunately, these failures do not affect the modes of movement, braking and stopping. Finally, the driver can guess about the possible failure of the display in the car by frequent reboots of the screen and by the periodic loss of the cellular signal.
