Thunderbird will have built-in support for encryption and digital signatures based on OpenPGP

Thunderbird mail client developers сообщили about the intention to add to the release of Thunderbird 78, which is expected next summer, built-in support encryption of correspondence and certification of letters with a digital signature based on OpenPGP public keys.

Previously, this functionality was provided by the add-on Enigmail, which will be maintained until the end of support for the Thunderbird 68 branch (in releases after Thunderbird 68, the ability to install Enigmail will be removed). The built-in implementation is a new development, which was prepared with the participation of the Enigmail author. The main difference will be the use of one of the libraries that provides OpenPGP functionality, instead of calling the external GnuPG utility, as well as the use of its own keystore, which is not compatible with the GnuPG key file format and uses a master password for protection, the same as that used to protect accounts and S/MIME keys.

The process of migrating keys and settings after migrating from Enigmail to the built-in OpenPGP implementation will be automated. Thunderbird's previously available native S/MIME support will remain unchanged. Decision regarding the possibility of confirming the ownership of keys through the mechanism Web of Trust (WoT) not accepted yet.
