Ubuntu 25.10, scheduled for release on October 9, has approved the default use of Dracut to create initial RAM disk (initrd) images instead of initramfs-tools, which has been on hold for the last few years and is now limited to maintenance work. Since the development of 25.10 has been frozen since mid-August, preventing the addition of new functionality, an exception has been granted by the release team to switch to Dracut. Initramfs-tools has now been replaced by dracut in the meta-packages.
Switching to Dracut will solve such problems as the inability to use systemd in initrd, lack of support for NVMe over Fabric (NVM-oF), abundance of shell code in initrd, and complexity of maintenance due to separate work with initrd and root FS.
