Midlands Future Mobility Company Launched a project to build a 300-kilometer route designed to test vehicles with an automatic driving function. The route will be laid between the British cities of Coventry and Birmingham. Fully autonomous vehicles will appear on it gradually. First, cars capable of β€œcommunicating” with each other will start driving along the road. They will warn each other about possible obstacles, notify the need to slow down and change weather conditions.

Even when self-driving cars appear on the roads, there will be at least one person inside the cabin. He will monitor the operation of the autopilot and, in case of danger, take control. Regular cars will be able to drive on the paved road, but most drivers will not know which of the driving cars is controlled by the autopilot system.

The road will be built by Costain. She will be assisted by network equipment manufacturer Siemens, because the route must be equipped with wireless equipment for testing. According to their calculations, some sections of the route will be completed by the end of 2020 and will be fully operational.

What kind of cars will be tested on the new road is still unknown. Tesla electric vehicles are currently equipped with the smartest autopilot, which is why the cost of this feature will soon will increase for 1000 dollars. With further improvement in technology, the price tag can rise even higher.
