Volkswagen Group announced the start of testing in Hamburg of self-driving cars equipped with a fourth level autopilot system.
Vehicles with the fourth level of automation can move independently in most situations. A fifth level of automation is also provided: it assumes that cars move completely autonomously throughout the entire trip - from start to finish.
Volkswagen has reportedly equipped the e-Golf with a Level XNUMX autopilot. Five such machines are taking part in tests in Hamburg.
The test vehicles are equipped with eleven laser scanners, seven radars and fourteen cameras. In the luggage compartment there is a computing node, which is comparable in performance to 15 conventional laptops.
Curiously, every minute the autopilot generates up to 5 GB of data. The system captures and processes information about pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles, intersections, priority of passage, parked cars and changes in the traffic stream in milliseconds with the highest accuracy.
As part of the trials, e-Golf robotic vehicles will travel a three-kilometer route inside Hamburg. A specially trained pilot will always be in the driver's seat, ready to take control at any time.
We add that a nine-kilometer test section is currently under construction in Hamburg, which will be equipped with all the necessary infrastructure for using automated control and data exchange with information networks. Completion of the facility is scheduled for 2020. By the date of completion of work in Hamburg, the modernization of traffic lights should be carried out in stages: they will be equipped with modules for the exchange of information in the systems “infrastructure-vehicle” (I2V) and “vehicle-infrastructure” (V2I).
