In "Yandex" consider that the technology from the law on Runet worsens work of services

Yesterday the State Duma took law on sovereign Runet. But back in March, the now legalized methods led to disruptions in the work of Yandex services. We are talking about testing DPI technology (Deep Packet Inspection) and a network attack in the middle of last month. Recall that Yandex faced a powerful DNS attack, due to which traffic had to be allowed in a bypass, which led to overloads at providers. Now появились expert opinions on this matter.

“A couple of weeks ago, we unwittingly had some “exercises” when, for reasons related to the blocking of Roskomnadzor, traffic [to Yandex resources] went through the existing DPI system operators now. After that, most of the services collapsed, users experienced wild difficulties, and, accordingly, we have already experienced what it is to pass traffic through DPI,” Sokolov said during a speech at the conference “Ensuring trust and security when using ICT”.

“From the context of the law [on the sovereign Runet], it is clear that these means of combating external threats are nothing more than DPI systems through which all traffic is planned to pass. Accordingly, with current traffic volumes, such DPIs do not exist in the world, and are not even being developed that could support such a mode without significant losses for services,” Alexey Sokolov said.

In other words, when using DPI, the access speed will inevitably fall, and services will receive less profit from advertising. At the same time, the technology itself is quite convenient, since it allows you to find and block viruses, filter data, and so on. But using it for blocking is inefficient, since the systems are very expensive, and also increase signal delays.

Note that a few days ago Roskomnadzor recognized the inefficiency of Telegram blocking. According to the head of the RKN Alexander Zharov, the existing blocking system does not have the expected impact, but the agency still blocks the IP addresses of the Telegram messenger, and the service itself is slower.

“It is too early to draw conclusions. There was a court decision that we are executing. Obviously, the existing blocking system, which involves blocking by telecom operators based on the IP address and DNS signature, does not have the impact that it should have had if we were talking about blocking. But now we are talking about countering the spread of prohibited information on the territory of the Russian Federation. We still define the IP addresses where Telegram exists. We block them. From time to time, you probably observe on your smartphone that it loads more slowly, ”said Zharov.

In other words, the head of the RKN signed his own impotence.
