While Apple's macOS is hardly the hub of VR, users have had access to SteamVR since support was added in 2017. But Macs have never been known for their gaming capabilities, and that's especially true in a niche space like VR. Looks like Valve has figured it out.

Most reasonably priced Macs don't even have discrete graphics, and therefore simply don't have the resources to run high-end VR headsets and devices efficiently. No wonder that Valve announced about the official end of support for SteamVR on macOS. The decision was made so that engineers can focus on supporting Windows and Linux, the company said.

The only information that Valve has shared in the update notes is instructions for macOS users to select legacy SteamVR builds in the software's "beta" tab in the "Properties" menu. It's a handy tool for SteamVR fans on macOS, but unfortunately it's only a temporary measure: older versions of SteamVR will probably stop working one way or another.

This news will certainly be disappointing to some, but Valve has likely looked into the number of SteamVR users on macOS and decided that the cost of support is simply unprofitable in the long run. However, there is always a chance that the company will change its mind in the future - especially since Linux support is still preserved.
