Valve introduced its own variation of Auto Chess - Dota Underlords

In May, it became known that Valve registered Dota Underlords trademark. Various assumptions have been put forward, but now the project presented officially: The studio really liked the ideas behind Auto Chess, so they decided to create their own version of the popular game.

In Dota Underlords, players will face seven foes as they recruit and develop a team of heroes in a battle for supremacy in the city of White Spire. Here, victory is ensured not by the speed of reaction, but by deliberate and correct decisions. Over the past few weeks, the developers have been conducting closed beta testing of Dota Underlords, and now all owners of the Dota 2 Battle Pass can participate in it. Battles against seven other players, training with bots (with varying degrees of difficulty) and mixed games are available.

Battle Pass owners will find a link to add Dota Underlords to their Steam library right in the Dota 2 main menu, and in about a week, the beta test will be available to everyone on Steam (on Windows, macOS and Linux versions), as well as on the Google mobile stores Play and App Store. The open beta test will include ranked matchmaking, cross-platform play, and overall rating and overall progress on all user devices.

Valve introduced its own variation of Auto Chess - Dota Underlords

The announcement of Dota Underlords was not a big surprise - a couple of weeks ago Valve wrote: β€œIf you're like us, you've spent the last six months playing Dota Auto Chess. If you've ever followed the news from Valve, you know what's next: we'll play our favorite game or meet those who inspire us, and then we'll find a way to work together. In fact, Dota 2 exists because a group of people at Valve got really into the original mod. After we played Auto Chess about a billion times, it became absolutely clear that we should contact its creators, Drodo Studio, and start talking about cooperation.

So in February, we invited the Drodo team from China to a meeting to talk about the future of Dota Auto Chess and see if they would be interested in working directly with us (this week was the worst snowfall in years in Seattle; we apologize, Drodo ). We had a great conversation, but both parties came to the conclusion that for several reasons we could not work together. We have agreed that each party will develop own game and fully support each other.

In turn, the Drodo team gave its own comment on the situation: β€œWe are grateful to Valve for the support and help of Dota Auto Chess and the separate game Drodo. Valve is a great company that gave birth to the Steam platform and the open community of "The Workshop", allowing millions of players to discover their talents. As big fans of Dota 2, we are confident in the success of Valve's new game and expect it to be a world-class game. In the meantime, with the support of Valve, Drodo will be updating the DAC and will try to develop new modes and new adaptations for our standalone game. We aim to offer you and all Auto Chess fans even more opportunities. Thank you! It is thanks to you that we look confidently into the future and hope that we will grow together with you!”.
