UK seeks alternatives to Huawei 5G equipment in Japan and South Korea

Due to ongoing pressure from the United States, which considers the use of Huawei technologies a threat to national security, the UK has begun searching for an alternative to the Chinese company's 5G equipment. According to a Reuters source, British officials have discussed the possibility of supplying 5G network equipment with companies from South Korea and Japan.

UK seeks alternatives to Huawei 5G equipment in Japan and South Korea

The talks with Japan's NEC Corp and South Korea's Samsung Electronics, first reported by Bloomberg, come as part of a plan announced by Britain last year to diversify 5G equipment suppliers, the source said.

In January, the UK designated Huawei as a "high-risk supplier", limiting its participation in the construction of 5G networks and excluding it from suppliers of network core equipment.

The US believes this is not enough and continues to apply pressure to completely eliminate the use of Huawei equipment by British operators.

On Wednesday, US Senator Tom Cotton warned Britain that the decision to allow Huawei to participate in the rollout of 5G networks could harm military cooperation and cause problems in trade negotiations between the two countries.
