In the neighboring countries of China in the region, the fight against the spread of coronavirus is in full swing, and South Korea and Vietnam are no exception. Samsung Electronics has a focus on smartphone production in Vietnam. Local authorities even made exceptions for engineers from Korea in the rules for the arrival of foreigners.
Vietnam closed the border to Chinese tourists on February 29st. From February 14, a requirement to undergo a XNUMX-day quarantine was introduced for all persons arriving in Vietnam from South Korea. Since mid-March, Vietnam has almost completely stopped admitting foreigners to the territory of the country, exceptions are made only for highly qualified specialists.
An example of "special treatment" is the situation with the activities of Samsung Electronics. A few years ago, the Korean company concentrated its main capacities for the production of smartphones and components for them in Vietnam. Such migration made it possible to reduce dependence on China back in those years when no one even thought of a βtrade warβ with the United States. Samsung has managed to become one of the largest foreign players in Vietnam, the company generates up to a quarter of the country's export earnings. Two factories in northern Vietnam produce more than half of all Samsung smartphones.
It should come as no surprise that when Samsung wanted to speed up the expansion of its OLED production in Vietnam, local authorities allowing two hundred Korean engineers to enter the country, even without being required to undergo a mandatory two-week quarantine. This was not without consequences for the epidemic situation in Vietnam - a carrier of the coronavirus infection COVID-19 was detected at one of the local Samsung enterprises. Moreover, almost a thousand people fell into his circle of contacts, but no more than forty went under medical supervision. Such distortions are caused by attempts to find a balance between security considerations and economic interests.
