During the gamescom 2019 exhibition, 4A Games studio and Deep Silver publisher presented a trailer for the launch of the first story add-on The Two Colonels (in Russian localization - "Two Colonels") to the post-apocalyptic shooter Metro Exodus. To remind you that this DLC uses RTX technology, NVIDIA posted two videos on its channel.

In the base game, hybrid rendering with real-time ray tracing elements was only used for global illumination. This time, the developers went further. In the first DLC, ray-traced lighting effects are also calculated for normal emitting light sources like lamps, gunshots, or flamethrower flames. Benjamin Archard, senior rendering programmer, spoke about this in an interview with an NVIDIA representative.

He also noted that the expansion "Two Colonels" is dedicated to the history of the last days of the life of Colonel Khlebnikov (the father of the boy Kirill, whom the players meet in the main game). What happened in the metro is restored by Colonel Melnikov, walking through the destroyed stations of the Novosibirsk metro. Players will get acquainted with the history of the last days of the doomed underground city and will have a flamethrower at their disposal.

The second of the clips below show gameplay clips so you can fully appreciate the lighting with RTX effects. Metro Exodus: The Two Colonels is reminiscent of the old games in the series - there are no large open spaces, and the main action takes place in the stuffy and cramped underground tunnels of a dying Novosibirsk.

In early 2020, the developers will also release the Sam's Story add-on (in Russian localization - "Sam's Story"), which will tell about the adventures of Sam, a former US Marine who wants to return home. Players who purchase the Season Pass will receive both DLCs for free. The rest will have to buy them separately.
