Video: Microsoft shows off new Chromium-based Edge browser

Microsoft at the opening of the Build 2019 developer conference told the public details about the project of its new browser based on the Chromium engine. It will continue to be called Edge, but will receive a number of interesting innovations that are designed to make the web browser a viable alternative for users.

Curiously, IE mode will be built into this version. It will allow you to run Internet Explorer directly in an Edge tab, so you can use web applications and resources created under Internet Explorer in a modern browser. This feature is far from redundant, because 60% of enterprises still use Internet Explorer along with their main browser for compatibility purposes.

Microsoft also wants to make its browser more privacy-focused, and new settings are coming to that end. Edge will let you choose from three levels of privacy in Microsoft Edge: unlimited, balanced, and strict. Depending on the selected level, the browser will regulate how websites see the user's actions on the Web and what information they receive about it.

A curious innovation will be "Collections" - this feature makes it possible to collect and structure materials from pages in a special area. The collected information can then be shared and efficiently exported to external applications. First of all, in Word and Excel from the Office package, and Microsoft provides smart export. For example, a product page, when exported to Excel, will generate a table based on metadata, and when the collected data is output to Word, pictures and quotes will automatically receive footnotes with hyperlinks, titles, and publication dates.

In addition to Windows 10, the new version of Edge will come in versions for Windows 7, 8, macOS, Android and iOS - Microsoft wants the browser to be as cross-platform as possible and cover a wide number of users. Data import will be available from Firefox, Edge, IE, Chrome. If desired, it will be possible to install extensions for Chrome. These features and more will become available closer to the launch of the next version of Edge. To participate in browser testing, those who wish can visit a special page Microsoft Edge Insider.
