Sega presented in Japan, the next big installment in the Yakuza action-adventure series. A game called Ryu ga Gotoku 7 outside the home market will no doubt be called Yakuza 7 and will offer a new protagonist, a new setting, and most importantly, a completely new combat system, about which there were already rumors.

Yakuza 7 will take place after Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, which ended the long story of Kazuma Kiryu. The series will continue with a new protagonist, which will be Ichiban Kasuga - another former yakuza accused of a crime he did not commit. He is also likely to be a big fan of Dragon Quest.

According to Japanese gaming site Game Watch, which covered the press conference, the gaming area will be three times the size of the Kamurocho area, which has been featured in all previous mainstream games of the acclaimed adventure series.

It's all new, fresh, but the key change seems to be in the combat system, which will leave Streets of Rage-style fighting behind and offer a menu-driven approach that's more reminiscent of the combat system from Persona or Final Fantasy. You can see how it works in the following video from Game Watch:

Ryu ga Gotoku 7 will be released on PS4 in Japan on January 16, 2020, and shortly thereafter in North America and Europe as Yakuza 7. Next month, Tokyo Game Show attendees will be able to play the project.
