Video: Troll's fabulous Unreal 4.22 engine demo shows a new level of graphics with RTX

Stunning graphics may not be the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to trolls. But not at this time. During the State of Unreal presentation at GDC 2019 in San Francisco, a visually impressive Troll ray tracing demo was shown, created by Goodbye Kansas and Deep Forest Films based on Unreal Engine 4.22.

Featuring cinematic lighting, camera effects, complex soft shadows and reflections, the demo was run in real time on a single GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card. The mysterious plot shows the audience a girl in a dark forest, who cries over the lake, like Alyonushka from Vasnetsov's painting. Then some spirits appear, interacting with the magic crown, and at the end everything is interrupted with the appearance of something sinister. Maybe the girl was sacrificed here to the local troll?

“Ray tracing is more than just reflection. We are talking about all the subtle light interactions needed to create a natural, beautiful image, - said Nick Penwarden, director of development for Unreal Engine at Epic Games. “Ray tracing adds these subtle lighting effects throughout the scene, making everything more realistic and natural, and making it easier to create beautiful scenes.”

In general, Epic Games has devoted the lion's share of State of Unreal this year to supporting real-time ray tracing, along with other recent achievements of the Unreal Engine. Starting with version 4.22, the render engine will support the new Microsoft DirectX Raytracing API for real-time ray tracing. This assembly is already available in test form, and the release version will appear next week.
