Video: Workshop will appear in Overwatch - an advanced script editor

Blizzard continues to develop its team-based competitive shooter Overwatch. She recently released a video in which game director Jeff Kaplan talks about the upcoming major update. It will bring a workshop to the Match Browser, a script editor that allows players to create unique game modes and even prototype their own Overwatch heroes.

β€œI'll briefly tell you how this idea came about: we have two wonderful programmers in the team, their names are Dan and Keith. We let them develop something they want. And these two know very well the scripting system that we use in the game. They thought it would be great to share the power of our programmers and developers with the players so you can let your imagination run wild and create. So Keith and Dan have put a UI layer and a custom scripting system on top of the one used in the game, and now all PC and console players can create their own game modes, ”said Kaplan.

The system allows you to do a lot, but still it is designed for advanced users who are familiar with other script editors or programming. However, Blizzard has tried to make the workshop interface as clear as possible. There will also be a separate forum where those interested can ask questions about using the tool.

In the workshop, players will be able to take ready-made modes, study them, make changes, substitute various variables and look at the result. For example, the development team will offer as a sample mode "The floor is lava", in which the heroes light up when they are on the ground. Of course, characters like Farrah and Lucio will be kings in it. In the match browser, players have already tried to create a hide-and-seek mode, but the workshop will give much more options.

And the Mirrored Skirmish mode is a special version of the regular Skirmish, where all players on the battlefield play the same hero, which changes every minute. Also, the Mysterious Heroes mode can be made more balanced, for example, by limiting the number of tanks or supports, so that the teams are always more or less equal, despite the random selection of fighters.

A debugging program is also provided to help you find problems or misbehaving user scripts. Blizzard is sure that the workshop will bring a lot of new modes created by the community, but this is not a map editor. You can't add objects or change the geometry: you can only control the game logic and the parameters of the heroes. Players will be able to share the results of their developments with others, and the code will work both on PC and on consoles.
