A YouTube channel called TheRankings made a simple but quite entertaining 15-minute video showing the evolution of the list of the most popular gaming graphics cards (top 15 positions) over the past 2004 years - from 2019 to XNUMX. The video will be interesting to watch both for the "old people" to refresh their memories, and for relatively new players who want to plunge into history.
When the video starts in April 2004, the list already includes such big names as the legendary NVIDIA Riva TNT2 and ATI Radeon 9600. However, the leaders are already GeForce 4 and GeForce 4 MX, which together have 28,5% of all Steam users installed. It's interesting to see how ATI and NVIDIA are fierce competitors: the GeForce 6600 and 7600 turned out to be popular, but ATI's analogs are also strong. However, things went wrong in late 2007 as the GeForce 8800 gave NVIDIA a huge lead, taking up to 13 percent of all graphics cards on Steam and remaining at number one until early 2010.
In the next era, the competition is leveled again, with the Radeon HD 4000 and 5000 series taking the lead, and in March, the Radeon HD 5770 even takes first place, although it soon loses it due to the runaway success of the GeForce GTX 560. ATI (and, by extension, AMD) never again does not come out on top. Intel integrated graphics were added to the Steam polls in 2012 and immediately became a force to be reckoned with, with the HD 3000 and HD 4000 accelerators holding the top two positions from June 2013 to July 2015 due to their success in the laptop market.
In 2014 and 2015, AMD struggled to stay on the list of the most popular gaming graphics cards on Steam, and in September 2016, it completely drops out of it. From this point on, we are talking about the struggle of the two companies, but NVIDIA soon takes almost all 15 positions, displacing even Intel's integrated graphics. The GeForce GTX 9 and 10 series cards are just too strong, although the GTX 750 Ti should also be mentioned. The latest success story is the GTX 1060. Despite less performance than the similarly priced Radeon RX 580, the accelerator has become the most popular graphics card among gamers to date, being installed on 15% of PCs among Steam users.
All in all, NVIDIA is currently the undisputed king of the gaming graphics world, and its influence in the market has only increased in recent years, despite some strong offerings from AMD like the Radeon RX 580 and Vega 56. NVIDIA also dominates the modern gaming laptop market, which gives the green team has a crushing advantage. The video confirms that the mid-range GeForce cards that traditionally end with the XX60 are definitely bestsellers, as the new GTX 1660 and 1660 Ti launches confirm. However, there were exceptions for higher-end cards that offered outstanding benefits in their time, such as the 8800 GT and 8800 GTX in 2006 and the GTX 970 in 2014.
