Publisher Modus Games went behind the scenes at Frozenbyte Studios in a new video to talk about the making of Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince and talk to the key people behind the dreamlike platformer. For example, screenwriter Maija Koivula said that the Troika artifact, which is the key to the plot of the games in the series and binds the characters together, was found in the depths of the Astral Academy. At first it seems that this is just a magical object, but in the second part it shows its character, and in the third it turns out that the object has its own will and a personality is contained within it. The new story was created in such a way as to create a sense of a fairy tale and immerse you in childhood.
Koivula also says that since the first part, the acting characters are by no means heroic personalities: the failed wizard Amadeus; Pontius, who in fact is just the guard of the Astral Academy and pretends to be a knight; and the thief Zoya, who initially joined the strange company simply in the hope of stealing something worthwhile.
Trine 4 producer Joel Kinnunen said that the game will offer a completely new story: the leadership of the Astral Academy sends heroes in search of the mysteriously missing Prince Celius. This character is a talented wizard who discovered the ability to revive the nightmares of those around him. This ever-increasing ability of Celia has become a real curse for the kingdom.
Art director of the studio Charlotta Tiuri (Charlotta Tiuri) noted that the story is extremely important for working out the visual style of the game, reflecting the nightmares of the characters in the level design, and so on. The artists also drew inspiration from the nature around them. For example, one of the levels was created based on the Finnish lake region. The beauty of these lands in the game will be clouded by the purple nightmares of Prince Celius, with which the heroes will have to fight.
In the course of the story, a lot of gameplay fragments, concept drawings, studio shots demonstrating the process of creating a project are shown. Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince will be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on October 8, 2019. Those interested can also purchase the Trine: Ultimate Collection, which, in addition to the new game, will include Trine Enhanced Edition, Trine 2: Complete Story, and Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power. All players who pre-order will have access to the Toby's Dream bonus level as DLC.
