Respawn's Vince Zampella to lead DICE's Los Angeles division

Heading into the new year, Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella appears to have received a promotion of sorts within Electronic Arts' broader studio structure. A report from the Los Angeles Times announced that he will now head up DICE's Los Angeles division, known for its work on series like Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront.

In the past, DICE LA has primarily served as a studio that helps the core team in Stockholm with its larger projects. Now, under the leadership of Mr. Zampella, the developer will begin to create games on his own. However, at the moment information about what the studio’s first project might be has not been disclosed.

Vince Zampella also stated that DICE LA will likely undergo a rebrand in the future to more clearly separate the studio from DICE: β€œWe want to give it a new image. We want people to say, β€œThis is the place to go to create new content.” I think this team became known as the support studio for DICE Stockholm. I think rebranding is important to say to developers: β€œHey! Come work here. We're going to create amazing things."

However, Mr. Zampella's new position does not mean that his work at Respawn is over. The executive explained that he will still play an important role in helping Respawn, but now that the studio has a more stable infrastructure, the amount of daily work at the company has decreased slightly. Currently, Stig Asmussen leads the team responsible for Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Chad Grenier - for Apex Legends, and Peter Hirschmann for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.

The shakeup at DICE LA is certainly an interesting move by EA that will hopefully benefit the publisher in the long run. Considering the number of Electronic Arts studios that have closed in recent years, it seems the company needs to start building some new teams. Considering Mr. Zampella's past achievements, there is hope that DICE LA will delight the public with more than one good game in the future.
