Spectrum for 5G in France will be offered at a starting price of 2,17 billion euros, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, secretary of state at the economy and finance ministry, said Sunday in an interview with Les Echos newspaper.
This is much higher than the price recommended by Arcep, the organization responsible for regulating the telecommunications market in France. Arcep president Sébastien Soriano said earlier last week that the minimum selling price of spectrum should not exceed 1,5 billion euros, noting that significant investments would be required to introduce the new mobile technology.
Arcep launched the long-awaited 5G spectrum sale on Thursday, ending a long-running debate between the four carriers and the country's authorities on how best to launch the new mobile technology.
