The restoration of Notre Dame is contrary to modern European trends

Как is known, about a month ago, the roof and accompanying structures of the 700-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral (Notre Dame) burned down in Paris. It is unlikely that anyone will argue with the fact that this is a blow to the cultural and historical value of the world scale. The tragedy did not leave indifferent many people in the world, and not even necessarily those who consider themselves religious. Should the cathedral be restored? There shouldn't be two opinions here. Or rather, they would not have existed 5-10 years ago. But today, the principles of attitude towards ecology and tolerance actively promoted in Europe dictate completely different rules.

The restoration of Notre Dame is contrary to modern European trends

The website of the ETH Zurich (ETH Zurich) published press release, in which two academic staff members of the institution recommend removing the restoration of Notre Dame from the agenda. Environmental Buildings Section Professor Guillaume Habert and Alice Hertzog, Ph.D. "In a time of climate change and in light of the current religious landscape, rebuilding the Cathedral is no longer a priority."

Old oak wood and about 200 tons of lead and zinc are needed to restore the roof and spiers. One of the French wood producers has already offered its services in the form of a grove of 1300-year-old oaks - a working asset of Groupama in Normandy. In total, it is estimated that more than 21 hectares of forest will need to be cut down for roof beams and ceilings, which will be restored for centuries. Is it worth destroying the ecology of France for the sake of repairing Notre Dame? Profile experts are sure that it is not worth it. In any case, this is contrary to the policy of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (their absorption by plants) and runs counter to all "green" programs.

Finally, France is no longer subject to Catholicism. To build or maintain Catholic cathedrals in a country with multicultural and multireligious models of building a society is the height of unreasonableness, scientists say. Cathedrals, in their opinion, should be built in South America, where 80% of the population are devout Catholics, or in Africa in the countries of the so-called sub-Saharan region, where a significant increase in Catholicism is expected in the coming decades. French President Emmanuel Macron promised to rebuild Notre Dame within five years. Now these plans do not look so unambiguous. In any case, a certain lobby has appeared on this issue with considerable chances to interfere with the process.
