For the first time in Russia: Tele2 launched eSIM technology

Tele2 has become the first Russian cellular operator to implement eSIM technology on its network: the system has already been put into pilot commercial operation and is available to ordinary subscribers.

eSim technology, or embedded SIM (embedded SIM card), involves the presence of a special identification chip in the device, which allows you to connect to a cellular operator without the need to install a physical SIM card.

Tele2 reportedly implemented eSIM in two phases. First, the operator tested the "electronic" SIM-card on a group of employees. After successful trials, the company offered to try this high-tech solution to all Big Four customers who have eSIM-enabled subscriber devices.

The Tele2 operator has already developed service business processes and provided eSIM to its stores in Moscow and the region. The first "electronic" SIM-cards appeared in the flagship stores.

It is assumed that eSIM will improve the quality of a number of client services, speed up the service process and expand the capabilities of subscriber devices for their owners. The technology allows the use of an additional SIM card in eSIM-enabled devices.

It is important to note that the implementation of the technology was carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of the current legislation of the Russian Federation in the field of security. All customers wishing to become the first eSIM users in Russia must apply to the Tele2 salon with a passport and receive a QR code, that is, an β€œelectronic” SIM card. The user, through the settings of his device, selects the "Add SIM card" item and scans the QR code. The smartphone software adds a profile and registers the subscriber in the Tele2 network.

We also add that the "big three" mobile operators - MTS, MegaFon and VimpelCom (Beeline brand) - oppose the introduction of eSIM. The reason is a possible loss of income. You can find out more about this in our material
