Facebook's annual Oculus Connect conference, dedicated to new developments in the field of virtual and augmented reality, is scheduled for September 16th. The Oculus Connect VR event has been renamed to Facebook Connect. It will be held on September 16 in an online format.

“Connect has become more than just an event about new Oculus technologies. Get the latest news on products ranging from Spark AR to Facebook Horizon. Therefore, our annual VR and AR technology event will now be called Facebook Connect. This name better reflects the completeness of the coverage of those technologies that will be discussed, ”the message on the official blog of the company says.

Since this year the event will be held in an online format, everyone will be able to watch it, and at the same time, for the first time for the event, it is completely free.

Facebook also announced that it has decided to change the name of an internal studio that develops virtual and augmented reality technologies. Now it will be called Facebook Reality Labs (FRL). The name was originally owned by Facebook's research team, formerly known as Oculus Research. It will now be known as FRL Research. It will continue to be led by video game pioneer and technologist Michael Abrash, who joined Facebook from Oculus and now leads R&D.

The company also clarified that it has no intention of dropping the Oculus name from its virtual reality products. Facebook is still planning to release new VR headsets under the Oculus brand. In general, Oculus is the heart of VR development for her.

Perhaps not all fans of the sphere of virtual reality will like the rebranding of the event. Earlier, Facebook faced a wave of criticism after it reported that it would not be possible to fully use Oculus headsets from October this year without an account on the social network.
