Following the rise in sales of laptops, Intel partners expect a decline in the PC market

At the end of the first quarter, Intel increased revenue in the laptop segment by 19%, and the number of mobile processors sold increased by 22% compared to the same period last year. Moreover, the company received twice as much money from the sale of laptop components as from desktop components. The transition to remote work will only increase this advantage.

Following the rise in sales of laptops, Intel partners expect a decline in the PC market

Intel partners from the pages of the publication CRN decided to explain what factors were responsible for the increase in demand for laptops in the first quarter, if we exclude the most obvious one - the need to organize remote workspaces at home. Representatives of the American company LAN Infotech recalled that part of the growth in demand for PCs in the last two quarters is associated with the end of the life cycle of Windows 7. However, the dominant factor was the need to switch to remote work. Over the past three weeks, demand had skyrocketed, and literally everything that contained a central processor was being purchased. Many buyers simply suddenly realized that their old computers could not cope with modern workloads.

In these conditions, desktop systems have ceased to be popular even among corporate buyers. In this sense, a laptop gives more flexibility; you can work on it both at home and in the office. If necessary, services such as Windows Virtual Desktop allow you to organize a familiar working environment even in a “remote office”. Interest in such solutions will continue after self-isolation ends.

Future Tech Enterprise representatives do not share their colleagues' enthusiasm for the dominance of laptops. If you need to work from home for a long time, they say, desktop systems are more convenient - at least even from a cost point of view. Pessimistic forecasts for the second half of the year, in their opinion, largely reflect the lack of money to update the computer park, rather than a decrease in real need. It will be corporate customers and small businesses that will be the first to cut their spending on computers in the second half of the year if the economic crisis worsens. Park upgrades may be delayed until the fall, and in some cases until next year. Over the past five weeks, the number of unemployed people in the United States has increased by 26 million people. Such dynamics do not allow us to expect continued high demand for PCs in the coming months.
