Alt 9.0 distributions released on seven hardware platforms

Three new products of version 9.0 based on the Ninth ALT platform (p9 Vaccinium) were released: "Alt Workstation 9", "Alt Server 9" and "Alt Education 9". When creating distributions of OS "Viola" version 9.0 for a wide range of hardware platforms, the developers of OS "Viola" focused on the needs of corporate customers, educational institutions and individuals.

Domestic operating systems are available simultaneously for seven Russian and foreign hardware platforms for the first time. Now Alt OS works on the following processors:

  • "Viola Workstation 9" - for x86 (Intel 32 and 64-bit), AArch64 (NVIDIA Jetson Nano Developer kit, Raspberry Pi 3 and others), e2k and e2kv4 ("Elbrus"), mipsel ("Meadowsweet Terminal").
  • "Alt Server 9" - for x86 (32 and 64 bit), AArch64 (Huawei Kunpeng, ThunderX and others), ppc64le (YADRO Power 8 and 9, OpenPower), e2k and e2kv4 ("Elbrus").
  • "Alt Education 9" - for x86 (Intel 32 and 64 bit), AArch64 (NVIDIA Jetson Nano Developer kit, Raspberry Pi 3 and others).

In the near future, "Basalt SPO" - the release of the distribution kit "Alt Server V 9". The beta version of the product already exists and is available for testing. The distribution will run on x86 (32 and 64-bit), AArch64 (Baikal-M, Huawei Kunpeng), ppc64le (YADRO Power 8 and 9, OpenPower) platforms. We are also preparing to release distribution kits "Alt Workstation K" with KDE and Simply Linux environment for home users also for different hardware platforms.

In addition to expanding the range of hardware platforms, a number of other significant improvements have been implemented for the Viola OS distribution kits version 9.0:

  • apt (advanced packaging tool, a system for installing, updating and removing software packages) now has support for rpmlib (FileDigests), which will allow you to install third-party packages (Yandex Browser, Chrome and others) without repacking, and many other improvements;
  • the LibreOffice office suite is implemented in two versions: Still for corporate customers and Fresh for experimenters and advanced users;
  • a single Samba package is available (for regular workstations and for Active Directory domain controllers);
  • in distributions, the Application Center (similar to Google Play) is available, in which you can search for the desired free program from different categories (educational, office, work with multimedia, etc.) and install it on your computer;
  • implemented support for current GOST algorithms.

Work on porting Viola OS distributions to new hardware platforms continues. In particular, it is planned to release versions for systems based on Baikal-M and Raspberry Pi 4.
